Black Isle Baking is a monthly newsletter written by me, Ruth Barry, a professional baker and writer based in California. I founded and ran Black Isle Bakery for nearly a decade, and am currently working on my first baking recipe book.

I grew up on the Black Isle, a small peninsula in the Scottish Highlands, and much of my work is inspired by what I grew up eating. I’m drawn to simple things made well, making the most of seasonal ingredients, and I especially love to share what I bake.

Once a month, I share a personal essay with a related recipe. Think olive oil cake, peach semifreddo, mushroom wellington. Recipes that will become your reliable friends for celebrations, Sunday lunch, or just to accompany your afternoon coffee.
