Moving to another country and having to get used to local ingredients can be so frustrating. I remember really struggling in Rome to find decent butter. Most butter I could find was weirdly pale, almost white, and had none of the buttery flavour I was so used to. No wonder many Italians don’t like butter! Had to resort to imported Irish butter and the few brands of butter from Tyrol I could find.
Not butter! 😩 That is, at least, one of the things that Germans do very well. It’s always the simple things that are most surprising, right?! Luckily marshmallows are the only thing I’ve struggled to find so far. Generally, I’m enjoying the significantly increased quality of food! And still terrified of my MIL’s crotchety stove…❤️
Right? And also something needed so often when baking!
You are in California now, right? I can imagine that the produce must be incredible - enjoy! And good luck with the crotchety stove! Before we redid our kitchen I had to contend with a gas oven - I had to basically relearn how to bake, it was a nightmare!
So, I actually did try them! To melt them, you have to go superduper low and slow. But, the problem was that they didn’t emulsify with the butter and I didn’t have time to do a deep dive on plant-based fats and quantities. I think it would wind up being a completely different recipe. I may still work on it, and will post if I do! I agree that they taste pretty good and could also imagine them working v well in s’mores ❤️
One size does not fit all. Just like a stretch and chew are not all the same. I remember bringing brown sugar and Maldons from London. The search for familiarity in a new country can be wonder or a boatload of frustration 😑 Does Trader Joe’s stock better ingredients (providing there’s one close)? So grateful to have trialed your Berlin recipe! ♥️

I’m just glad there’s a toaster oven to help me out! Add
You should try the Dandies brand marshmallows next time - they're vegan but I actually feel like they taste better than standard marshmallows 🙂
